The Railway line from Mettupalaiyam to Ooty is 45.88KM long and lies partly in Coimbatore District and partly in Nilgiri District of Tamilnadu, on the eastern slopes of the Western Ghats. Mettupalaiyam is at the foothills with an elevation of about 330 meters and Udagamandalam (Ooty) on the plateau with an elevation of 2200 metres.

Nilgiri Mountain railway operates from Mettupalayam to Ooty. Coonoor is the other main station on the journey. Train starts at 07:10 in morning from Mettupalayam and reaches Ooty around 12:30PM in afternoon. Railway station is centrally located in Ooty and is very near from Ooty bus stand and auto stand, It has ATM facility for tourist's convenience but it would not be working most of the times.
