Pykara is a region in Tamilnadu that is 30Km away from Ooty. This place has a water fall called Pykara Falls and the water flown from the fall goes to a catchment area called Pykara Lake. Pykara is also a native region or area for one of the 4 ethnic groups known as Todas.

Pykara lake is the largest lake in the area having crystal clear water and covering a big area in the valley of pine trees. TN govt runs a boat house here for the tourists. Pykara boat house has motor boats, peddle boats and big boats that can be opted by groups. Pykara boat house is the best boating experience in Ooty right now as the Ooty Lake Boat House is continuously deteriorating due to heavy tourist traffic and low rainfall.

Once you get the tickets from booking counter for Pykara Boat House you can queued up to access the boats. It takes 20 mins to complete round of Pykara lake using motor boat and 10 mins using Spped boat. Other than Pykara Boat House, tourists can visit Pykara falls which is on the way and approx 5 Km from Pykara Lake. Falls having a good flowing water during all year gives very scenic locations and thrilling water fall experience together. Best time to visit Pykara Lake as well as Pykara Falls is in Winter season after monsoon when you have ample amount of water in bodies.

Avalanche is an important tourism destination in the Nilgiris District, 25kms away from Ooty town. This area is surrounded by a rolling landscape with blooming flowers like magnolias, orchids and rhododendrons. Over 2700 species of flowering plants, 160 species of fern and fern allies, countless types of flowerless plants, mosses, fungi, algae, land lichens are found in the sholas of the Nilgiris.

A 2-mile hike in Glacier National Park lead to this serene lake with mountain & waterfall views that makes it a must among the places to visit in ooty. Avalanche lake is part of the Avalanche Forest Reserve which is a ecotourism site amid tropical forest offering guided safari, camping and adventure activities within. This places got its form and name from an avalanche in 1980s

It takes 1.5 hours from Ooty to reach Avalanche Forest Reserve, from here you can opt for Jungle Safari which takes 2 hours up and down and will take you to 3 places: water fountains, Sholas and finally to Avalanche Lake itself. View points are very good and you will enjoy scenic views. Though forest reserve operates 3 jungle safaris in a day, I would suggest plan for the first in the morning it gives you best atmosphere in morning and will be less crowded.

The Doddabetta Peak is the highest point in the district, making it possibly the best vantage point around Ooty. It is merely 10km from Ooty so you can simply grab your camera and head straight to the peak, and click amazing pictures of the valley below. It is like having a bird's eye view around 20-50 KM of area.

On a clear day, which is not very often, one can see far off areas, even the plains of Coimbatore and the flat highlands of Mysore. It is only 10KM from Ooty so you can hop on a bus from Ooty Bus Stand to reach here. It will cost 10Rs. You have to get off the bus on main road and hike to the top which is 3KM of walk. If you are travelling by own vehicle it takes you till top, Doddabetta Peak has parking facility and a small canteen if you feel hungry walking to the top.

Doddabetta peak as name suggest is a hill and if you are a wild nature lover you might get upset as this place is developed as a Telescope Point to have a broad and long view from the top. But in any case it provides very picturesque spot for photographers and equally enjoyable by families.
